Callinectes sapidus (from the Greek calli-= 'beautiful', nectes = 'swimmer', and Latin sapidus = 'savory'), the blue crab, Atlantic blue crab, or regionally as the Chesapeake blue crab, is a species of crab native to the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and introduced internationally. Live crab may be gotten year-round, However, peak season & best quality is approximately April through November, weather permitting. There is NO Commercial harvest of female blue crabs in Louisiana waters from and March 1 to April 30, 2019. This is to ensure the healthy breeding of the species. Do you ship blue crabs.

*Please note that the average mortality rate is approximately 20% when ordering live Maryland crabs. Shipping and handling may cause all crabs to be dead (box upside down, thrown around truck, etc.) If this is a concern, then we recommend that you order steamed crabs instead.* We can only offer store credit if death loss is greater than 20%, and we are not able to give any refunds on dead crabs.

How to Steam Maryland Crabs: Order your live Maryland crab online and add 1 part water and 1 part apple cider vinegar to a large pot or crab steamer. Bring liquid to a boil. Add live hard crabs to the pot and sprinkling dry Old Bay crab seasoning on each layer. Cover pot and and wait for steam to escape the lid (about 10 mins). Steam the Maryland blue crabs for 20 to 30 minutes more (until crabs turn orange). If shells are dark red or green spots, then crabs are not fully cooked. Remove crabs from the pot and coat lightly with Old Bay seasoning.

Standard Male Blue Crabs Standard crabs are approx. 5' to 5½' in size.

Should I order live blue crabs or order steamed crabs?
We do everything that we can to package your live MD crabs in containers that will help to keep them alive as long as possible. Unfortunately, some of the crabs don't always make it due to environmental factors such as outdoor temperature, handling of the courier, etc. Upon receiving your order, only consume the live crabs and discard any that are no longer moving. We recommend that you order our steamed crabs to ensure 100% edibility when your crabs are delivered.
